The Role of Women in Industrial Development of Pakistan
by: Sheikh Muhammad Ali (Chairman Standing Committee on IT)
Pakistan came into its being on 14th of August, 1947. It was the result of immense struggle and extreme devotion of our ancestors that we were able to have a separate home land. Our ancestors fought bravely for the struggle of Pakistan and achieved their goal within a short period of just seven years after the “Pakistan Resolution” was passed on 23rd of March, 1940. Our brave women stood side by side with their men and proved to be their right hand in “Pakistan Movement”. We cann’t ignore the part of women in “Pakistan Movement”. If we have a look at the history of “Pakistan Movement”, we will come to know that it was impossible to make the dream of Pakistan come true if they had fought without women.

Honorable Ladies paid a visit to MIG Indutrial Exhibition.

Now, at the present moment, there is a severe need for the women to play their role again, not in the struggle to achieve a separate homeland but to gain a stabilized economy for the country and bring their homeland out of the economical crisis.
It is quite obvious that we cann’t ignore more than half of our population. We cann’t put our country on the road to success by depriving our more than 50% minds off the basic rights of education and freedom. We must let them realize their importance. Had we done that, we would have been in a far better position than where we are now.

Gujranwala having an industrial background, always played and important role in the development and advancement of our country by producing various high quality light industry products in this particular field. It is this city that not only enhanced the quality of the of the products manufactured locally and brought them to the level of international markets but also switched the mind of a common man to a better time frame where people think of a collective welfare rather than implementing and independent workstation.
Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce & Industry always helped industrialists to present their products in front of people and let them judge and compare them to the products of international markets. The “Made in Gujranwala” Industrial Exhibition, 2003 has been the third event of the sort in the three previous years, consecutively. The exhibition started on 17th of March, 2003 and lasted up to the 7th of April, 2003, when at the concluding ceremony Governor Punjab came to end the exhibition. Before that during the exhibition respected dignitaries were invited to visit the exhibition and watch the quality standards been achieved by the people of Gujranwala in their particular fields every day.

To make the women of this city as well as the other, realize their importance in this field and to take part in the development of technology and industry in Pakistan, “Ladies Day” was observed in the third “Made in Gujranwala” Industrial Exhibition, 2003 on 22nd of March, 2003, where only ladies were allowed to come in the exhibition area where stalls of high quality were displayed. The basic purpose why “Ladies Day” was observed, was to make our women feel their importance of in every walk of life including “Science and Technology” and took part in the progress and development that our industry is making at present time.
On 22nd of March, 2003 when “Ladies Day” was observed, Mrs. Chief Secretary was present as the chief guest for the occasion. Upon her arrival at the exhibition area at 11:45 am, she was warmly welcomed by Mrs. Akram Badshah, Mrs. Najeeb Aslam, Mrs. Kasim Alkarim, Mrs. Kh.Tahir Hasan, Mrs. Shaheen Raza, Baji Rushda Sahiba and Mrs. D.C.O. Gujranwala. Mrs. E.D.O. Tahir Khurshid was also present to receive her. While visiting different stalls of the industrial exhibition she expressed her pronounced appreciation for the tableware, melamine ware, porcelain and china clay order. She also praised the quality of plastic furniture and kitchen home appliances. During the four hours spent in the exhibition area the food stalls were also visited by her.

She left the following remarks about the industrial exhibition in the visitor’s book “To the Chamber of Commerce. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and felt welcome and taken care off. It’s amazing how our country developing today Pakistan … tomorrow the world. It’ reassuring that our industry can compete in the International market any way. Thank you for a wonderful day”. As the Chief Guest she also expressed her views that the industry of Gujranwala not only played an important role in the development of this country but also introduced Pakistan in the modern world. After lunch the Chief Guest and all the officials were presented with shields from GCCI.
She also regarded the presence of women in the field of “Science & Technology” a plus point for the development of different ideas among industrial circles and it would help reduce illiteracy. Education be a key factor in this respect. Illiterate woman and a literate one, a world of difference.
We must not think of women education as a job perspective. Education unveils those facts and realities that an illiterate person could never think them off and women being more kind and patient can think in a better way. We must create an atmosphere where women can work with complete freedom and ease. They must be given full courage and motivation to prove their capabilities in the field specified. This be the only way we can lead to the prosperity and success of our nation.
Mrs. Chief Secretary in her press briefing stressed the need to educate our women and to make the feel strong about their presence in the industry. We must wipe out the old concepts that women are suitable for some particular jobs only. We must let them come our industry so that ou8r country has a potential step up with their countries. It is not the matter of giving our women so much freedom that our society becomes comparable to the European societies but it’s the matter of utilizing their talent in the best possible manner.
Pakistan being an agricultural country depends on the vegetation done here. It is a fact that directly or indirectly our women are working equally with their men in the field specified. This is merely one example of women taking part in professional work that has been done here by them through ages. Many more examples are there that can be stated here that reveals the fact that our women have been working along side by side with their men. Now we see the women of other nations taking part in the field of “Science and Technology”, then why cann’t our women educate themselves in this field in our region while they still do a lot in other fields.
If we talk about the capabilities possessed by the people of our region, we will come to know that they have got an immense potential. The need is to utilize our talent in the right direction. Once we are committed to do the job, there is no reason left we cann’t make progress. In small industries at home, women are performing their task nicely. Slowly and gradually they are moving ahead in each and every walk of life. We must make them realize their importance and let them come in our industry. We must fix a quota for them in the technical institutes. Seats must be reserved at national level for them. More and more girl schools and colleges must be built in. The government should create an environment which should be based on the equality of either sex. All the institutes must consider their presence.
Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce & Industry took the responsibility on its shoulders and decided to observe a “Ladies Day” in the third “Made in Gujranwala” Industrial Exhibition, 2003. Ladies from political, social, economical and educational circles were invited there to welcome chief guest Mrs. Chief Secretary. This was yet another attempt by Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce & Industry to motivate the industrialist community to feel free to give women a chance to go ahead.
Summarizing all the discussion, we come to the conclusion that the only way we can make progress in industry is that we must introduce our women too in our industry so that we have a better workstation to work with where all women should have a freedom to choose their career and come out with a different personality and work with sincerity for the prosperity and integrity of our nation.
